Episode 5 of the 2nd season of Gossip Girl finds Serena, our favorite Manhattan blonde, ready to take on this beast of a city yet again. And, of course, she’s making waves for Blair – yet again. The episode, entitled “The Serena Also Rises” is dripping with some of the best Gossip Girl music yet. There are seriously enough great songs in this episode to make that special night with the TV and a bottle of wine (and the GG guys, of course) that much better.
The episode kicks off with a quick shot of the tents at Bryant Park to get you thinking of fashion week and hot models with Conor Oberst’s “NYC – Gone, Gone” thumping behind it. If this song doesn’t get you surfing the Web for the next flight to New York, you might not have a pulse.
The episode hits on some very interesting story lines – Dan and Chuck actually go out together to a bar. With some classic lines – “Does this mean you’re gay?” Chuck asks him. Ooh, and we get a glimpse of Chuck’s secret – you gotta see the episode…
Then it’s back to the fashion tents, and we’re hearing “Pokerface” by Lady Gaga – a groovy hip-hop number. Sure to get the blood flowing. Can you picture the models showing up? And, when Serena and her new society friends get to actually walk (or should we say “rock”?) the runway, we get one of the best tracks of the episode, if not the entire season – “Fille Atomique” from the French outfit Nous Non Plus. Whoever said French bands can’t score a hit haven’t heard this tune.
With some additional spacey tracks, and a killer one to close it out (“Raise the Dead” from Phantom Planet – is that David Byrne singing?), this Gossip Girl episode reminds us all again why this show has us begging for more – and sneaking back to the kitchen for one more glass of wine.
