This week’s Gossip Girl has everyone toeing the line about what their consciences – and their families – can take. Both of the Humphreys are faced with a choice between a shameless power grab and their father’s more ethical, but less certain road to the top. When Jenny realizes that Agnes’s spontaneity and free spirit makes for a lousy business partner, she dumps the last person who was on her side. All that stands between her and a career is Rufus’s signature, but stubbornness seems to be a family trait. Rufus refuses to condone her actions by signing her contract, Agnes refuses to exit the stage gracefully, and Little J ends up homeless and crying over the ashes of her designs. The girl seems to have a backbone of titanium, and accepts her last option: emancipation from her parents. For his part in Episode 10, Dan takes the path of The Good Son and passes up a potentially career-making opportunity for a muckraking piece on Bart Bass.
Eleanor’s new beau turns out to be head and shoulders below the competition – literally. Blair vows to take down her pint-sized new problem, but is gracefully outmaneuvered by “the gnome.” Cyrus, who as it turns out is Aaron’s father, wins the battle, but the war has only begun. Blair has barely accepted him as a casual suitor when the gnome moves in full time. While Cyrus has found his lady, his son seems happy to dabble. Serena finally realizes that she’s not his only muse, and is disinclined to share her new sweetie. The next day, though, a rather manipulative entreaty from Aaron has her frolicking barely-clad in the park.
The weird thing about Gossip Girl 10 is Nate’s complete absence. Could it be that, having hooked up with every girl on the show, he’s on to greener pastures for good? Only time – and the next Gossip Girl episode – can tell.
