Article: Penn Badgley has been acting for the past eight years, but it is only now with his role on The CW's Gossip Girl that he has gotten a taste of fame and celebrity. Badgley, however, remains very modest about his newfound success. Although he knows he is the series' first break-out star, he is quick to commend his Gossip Girl costars. "It's a great cast all around," he told the New York Post. "In a lot of teen soap operas, you have a lot of pretty faces and maybe not a lot of talent, but I really do feel that there isn't a weak link in the Gossip Girl cast." Still, he does feel like the acting veteran among the cast, having starred in several short-lived and quickly forgotten series like Do Over, The Mountain and The Bedford Diaries, all three of which aired on the WB, the predecessor of the CW.
"[The network has] been grooming him to be a teen star for so long now - some of the characters he's played in the past were a little bit more dorky, but he's grown into his own in this role and this is his moment," CosmoGirl! entertainment editor Rachel Chang said. Badgley, on the other hand, said he was unaware that the CW was grooming him for success until he landed his Gossip Girl role. "It definitely felt like, 'What can we put Penn in this year because we want to keep him working for us?' " he said, adding that it's a "very positive feeling" to be wanted this way, and although he initially felt “a little cheesy doing WB show after WB show,” he is “definitely grateful for the opportunity they've given me and now that I'm on Gossip Girl, I wouldn't have it any other way." On the show, Penn Badgley plays Dan Humphrey, the teen poet who serves as a moral compass for the privileged and often wayward prep school socialites. He is in love with possibly reformed party girl Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively). "Everyone wants Dan to be their big brother, their friend or their boyfriend,” Chang said. “He's appealing in every way - and that translates to Penn too.” Source: BuddyTV
